This is the condensed name from the Sherpa word yeh-teh, an anthropoid monster in the traditions and beliefs of the people of Tibet and Nepal.
The concept of this elusive, giant hairy humanoid existing in the mountains was firstrecorded in 1938 and made popular in Europe by Eric Shipton's Everest expedition onthe Menlung glacier in 1951, and the later Hillary-Tensing conquest party also reported evidence in 1953. The name 'Abominable Snowman' was given by the European explorers and mountaineers to the creature.
However, in the region there is more than one type, and they are known by three separate names: Dzu-Teh, Meh-Teh, and Yeh-Teh, the latter being the one most commonly used.
These names are used according to size and description, the Yeh-Teh being described as smaller, even though gigantic, andmore bear-like in appearance than the other two. There has been considerable evidence for the existence of these beings from photographs of enormous footprints in the upper Everest reaches, to actual rust-colored, hairy skins purporting to be the cranium of such a creature. Much discussion has taken place as to their origins and possible form of existence, but nothing has ever been conclusive.
